Wastes
# Wastes Wastes represents a mechanical shift in Magic's foundational design. As the first colorless basic land, it filled a gap created by the introduction of colorless mana costs in Oath of the Gatewatch. Before this, colorless requirements were rare enough that players could manage without dedicated mana sources. Collectors view Wastes pragmatically rather than sentimentally. It's a common from a relatively recent set, so copies are abundant and inexpensive. Most interest centers on full-art or special promotional versions rather than standard printings. The card matters more for what it represents—Magic's evolving rules—than for scarcity. Serious collectors typically acquire one copy for completeness rather than pursuing multiple variants.
