Swamp
# Swamp (Portal) Portal's basic lands occupy an unusual place in Magic collecting. As a closed product designed for new players, Portal had limited distribution and never entered regular tournament play, making even common lands scarce compared to their counterparts from contemporary sets. Collectors view Portal Swamps as historical artifacts representing Magic's experimental retail approach rather than as playable cards. The nonfoil version remains the only printing variant, which simplifies collecting but also means no premium alternative exists. Condition matters more for Portal basics than for later printings, since lower-grade copies are common. Serious Magic collectors often pursue Portal lands as set-completion pieces, valuing them for their rarity and distinctive art rather than gameplay utility.
